The “Public Hearing” concerning Traffic Enforcement Cameras was held on November 16, 2009. There was an attendance of 10 people plus 1 from SEOversight and 1 from the Sun Messenger. Is it possible that city officials orchestrated the low turnout? The term “Public Hearing” was concealed deep inside the confusing and difficult to negotiate city website. For further information regarding the lack of proper notification regarding this and other so-called “Public Hearings,” please see the following links to previous SEO posts:

this is simple.

At the meeting ask "so the purpose is to increase safety in/around schools, right?"

When they say "yes, of course" .. then say "why can't we then add language to the proposed ordinance to provide that 100% of the citation fee be provided to SEL school district to further their safety objectives".

They'll balk for two reasons .. one, cameras are installed under contract by a company that keeps ~60% of the revenue, and two, cities basically see speed cameras as a "cash cow".

But back them into a corner on the "safety around schools" argument by asking them if that's the purpose, then why won't they commit to using funds received for just such a purpose?

Answer: Because it is all diarrhea of the mouth.

Basically they have screwed up the city so bad that they need to invent new revenue streams. Welo has to keep their bread buttered.

So some cop, maybe the police chief himself, gets to sit at the computer screen observing the tapped "violations" and then decides if a ticket gets issued or not. What we have here, people, is another "fine" opportunity for municipal abuse. It's time they start using margarine sparingly instead of lavishing butter all over. At least that would be better then bending over the taxpayer and using nothing at all, ouch!
