Ordinance 81-06 authorized the Mayor to enter into a purchase agreement for the 9 Greenvale Drive homes. The purpose stated in the Ordinance seems contrary to the outcome.
How was the availability of adequate housing enhanced? Each of the 9 homes were doubles, so the property that once accommodated 18 dwelling units have become vacant lots.
How was the economic and general well-being of the people improved? $1.8 million and counting tax dollars vanished instantly when the City signed on the dotted line to purchase these houses and then demolished them.
The true reason behind this acquisition remains a mystery. The Sun Messenger reported on March 29, 2007: "Mayor Georgine Welo said the plan now involves waiting for the sale of nearby Lowden School, which will be sold by the South Euclid-Lyndhurst Board of Education, perhaps by the fall." They quote Welo: "Maybe we can do something with the developer who buys Lowden School. Or, we can go in another direction. This may be our chance to expand Quarry Park."
