Could the “ice cream social” possibly be a poorly veiled attempt to ambush unsuspecting residents into “volunteering” and donating money to the project?
With all of the financial hardships that South Euclid residents are currently enduring; including the drastic loss of their property values—how could anyone inside the Mayor’s administration or Council not realize this was not the time to undertake such a proposition? Why wasn’t the financing secured prior to making solid commitments?
Mayor Georgine Welo has been consistently vocal about the inevitable fact that resources will NEED to be interconnected in order for the Greater Cleveland Region to survive. It is precisely because of this that it makes no sense for South Euclid to ignore Preston’s Hope in nearby Beachwood.

What do we know so far?
1. How much will the project cost?

Regarding the cost: several accounts have emerged. The latest, reported by Welo in the September/October 2008 "Update", states $250,000.
Welo is on camera at a City Council meeting on 7-14-08 claiming $125,000 had been pledged so far. But, on 8-7-08, The Sun Messenger reported that Meg Martinez of the Community Center who is "overseeing the project" said $60 thousand had been raised as of that date. They reported that $50,000 of that total included a "commitment" from Verizon.
The City passed Ordinance 31-08 which loaned $150,000 to the project. It is supposed to be paid back when the money is donated.

So much for no public funds being used for the Playground of "Impossibilities".For children of all abilities.How politically correct can you get? It really tugs on the heart strings,doesn't it?Not to be cruel,but when was the last time you saw a parapalegic,quadrapalegic,severly mentally disabeled kid on a swing,jungle gym,monkey bars,or any other type of playground eqipment?When?
Another pork project that benefits only the developers and will give the Mayor reason to puff out her chest and proclaim that our city supports the disabeled,and only through her gift of city funds could this have been possible.
You know that $150,00.00 is gone.Kiss it goodbye.It will never be paid back thru donations.No money,other than a $50k donation from Verizon has been raised to this date.And don't forget about the annual 50k maintenance costs.
