Video below: A citizen addresses the administration and council regarding the apparent forthcoming reduction in safety forces. Once again, the taxpayers are the last to know. Amazingly, city officials do not offer the courtesy of a reply to the woman who brings her concerns to them.
At the very end of the meeting during a cryptic and evasive statement about the upcoming budget hearings, Council President David Miller tiptoes around the topic of layoffs. Note his attempt to blame others in
Safety Committee Chairperson, Councilwoman Ruth Gray announces that she wants a public hearing to disseminate information about the ramifications of police and fire layoffs and to obtain community input for council consideration. Unfortunately for the citizens, that meeting wasn’t scheduled until after the budget hearings.
The mayor makes only a fleeting comment about cutbacks in the police and finance departments before jovial banter begins about her vacation next week. Facing the possible layoffs of police and fire department employees, Welo is vacationing in Arizona during the budget hearings and declares herself, “Gettin’ out of Dodge for a week.”

Apparently Mayor Welo’s statement about wanting to lower her salary was disingenuous. (video below) The new mayoral term began on January 1, 2012. There was no legislation introduced to lower the mayor’s salary.
Where is a current Salary Ordinance reflecting Administrative pay reductions? The last Salary Ordinance was passed in 2009. Why is that?

To help correct what the resident stated in her comments to council it must be noted that she was right in the fact that, lowering safety forces would have a negative result on the community. What the resident was slightly misinformed on was that even though promotions took place it was to fill a void left by retirement not an addition. Also at the same time the city has already lost 5 firefighters do to attrition through retirement and those positions have not been filled. After growing up in South Euclid and calling it home for 18 years, it is sad to see Police, Fire and EMS cut when we all know that it is the last thing the city needs to lose.

I’m not sure if perhaps we are comparing apples to oranges, but if we are talking about the creation of positions, unless I’m misunderstanding either the speaker or your comment, I apologize if I’m not on the same page – BUT – I’ll post the salary ordinances for the city from 2003 – 2009. Notice there was no position of assistant in the police or fire departments until the 2005 salary ordinance shows up. Interestingly, those positions, along with many others were created shortly after the voters approved a tax increase. Feel free to jump back in if I’m mistaken.
