Two Different Stories

Below: A portion of the open meeting segment at the City Council Meeting on April 13th. Council President Moe Romeo fields questions on the topic of the “Playground of Possibilities.” For those without video access on your computer: It is alleged that although city officials have presented the playground to the public as fully funded and constructed exclusively by donations and volunteered time, tools and supplies- all with no public money- indeed that is NOT the case.

Below: City workers are hard at work on the “Playground of Possibilities" on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 10 days after the discussion in the video above. The installation of the rubber surface necessitates that the contracted company remain on site from April 22 through April 30th. It is unclear if the authorization of utilizing city workers and equipment will continue through that date or beyond.

I'm OK with the Service Department guys helping out at the POP. They are going to have to do maintenance there anyways and working in the City park on a City playground providing mostly labor should not be a major issue. After all, this is a City of South Euclid facility. It's not like they are working on someone's private property building a deck, pouring a driveway or something.

Thanks for commenting. You would be positively correct…..IF….city officials had NOT portrayed this playground build as a “community effort” fully funded by donations. It was to be constructed by volunteers from the community who even brought their own tools. It was sold to the public as NOT using taxpayer money to build or support. Yippee!

Well, unfortunately that’s not how it all turned out. Please see the information provided in this post including videos. Check out the links to other previously posted information and videos.

Without going into a dissertation, some obvious mistakes took place. For one, not securing the money before starting the project would have been a logical thought. Particularly when relying on “donations” and volunteers. When taking on a serious construction project with volunteer labor- it would be wise to make sure you’ve got the people lined up. This build took place over a week- including weekdays when most people work.

It all comes down to fiscal responsibility and honesty.

Thanks again for your participation.
