Absurd Spending

Below is a condensed version of the City of South Euclid Recreation Committee meeting held on September 8, 2008. It is presented in a three part video. The meeting was one hour, the video is edited to approximately 9 minutes.

The topic of discussion was the proposed idea of wireless Internet service to be provided at Quarry Park, Bexley Park and the Victory/Community Center area. It appears the likelihood of this expenditure is imminent as the City has already invested in a "site survey" with the provider.

According to the salesmen pitching the idea to the attending Council members, David Miller, Ruth Gray, Ed Icove, Moe Romeo, Jane Goodman and Robert Hartigan, whose voices can be heard on the audio - the up front cost will be $90,000 plus an estimated $4,000 per year in upkeep fees.

The Mayor did not attend this meeting as scheduled on the agenda. Perhaps it's time for her to quell her unquenchable thirst for image, and concentrate on what is best for her constituents. A good place to start would be with safety and basic city services.

VOTE NO - ISSUE 106

Below is a copy of the language for ISSUE 106 as approved by the Ohio Secretary of State which will appear on the ballot in South Euclid.
  • If you are opposed to "Point-of-Sale" inspections - VOTE NO ON ISSUE 106.

It is strange that during the current nationwide financial meltdown, the City of South Euclid is so eager to enact this legislation.

The People Deserve Better

Please click on image to view full size.

Not a soul among the City Council or Mayor’s administration were able to answer questions regarding Cedar Center. President of Council: Nope, he’s got nothing. Apparently the Law Director hasn't got the latest information because he didn’t offer anything. In fact, notice he never lifts his eyes from the desk. Neither does the Clerk of Council who previously proclaimed himself, “administrator for this program.” Well then, surely the Director of Finance or the Building Commissioner would have some kind of report. Can’t help you. Nobody knows anything about Cedar Center. Hmmm… Seems like they don’t want to talk about it.

With the salaries being doled out at City Hall, the public has a right to expect thorough and competent representation, especially when a multi-million dollar project is involved.

South Euclid Oversight has been waiting since February 2008 for a public records request asking for the amount of taxes paid for the tax year 2007 on the Cedar Center properties. Numerous requests and reminders sent to the City have not produced results.

The local media has also left the people high and dry of information as well.

Wireless Internet

City officials held a Recreation Committee meeting on September 8, 2008. The topic of discussion was acquiring wireless Internet at the Community Center, Victory, Quarry, and Bexley Parks.

Apparently, a "site survey" has already been bought and paid for by the City. The estimated cost of the proposed package is somewhere to the tune of $90,000 plus "approximately" $4,000 yearly maintenance fee.

"Certificates Of Inspection" : Ballot Language

  • ORDINANCE 65-05
  • CERTIFICATES OF INSPECTION
  • POINT-OF-SALE

THEY ARE THE SAME THING. THE MATTER WILL BE PRESENTED ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT AS “CERTIFICATES OF INSPECTION” AND “ORDINANCE 65-05.”

THE CUYAHOGA COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS HAS ADVISED US THAT THE BALLOT LANGUAGE HAS BEEN SUBMITTED TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR APPROVAL OR REVISION. WE WERE INFORMED THIS SHOULD OCCUR SOMETIME IN THE NEXT WEEK.

SOUTH EUCLID OVERSIGHT WILL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST REGARDING BALLOT LANGUAGE. ONCE THERE IS AN “OFFICIAL” DECISION MADE, WE WILL PUBLISH THE INFORMATION AS SOON AS IT IS OBTAINED.

ALTHOUGH AS SUBMITTED, IT CERTAINLY APPEARS THAT THOSE OPPOSED TO “CERTIFICATES OF INSPECTION” WILL BE VOTING “NO”, PLEASE ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION AND WAIT UNTIL THE “OFFICIAL” WORD IS IN FROM THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS. THEN SPREAD THE WORD FAR AND WIDE.

Trifecta Of Panic

Has desperation set in? City officials spoke of the “Playground of Possibilities” over a year ago in the 2007 September/October “Update on South Euclid.” Now, with about two weeks until the scheduled build date, their actions indicate a lack of preparedness.

Could the “ice cream social” possibly be a poorly veiled attempt to ambush unsuspecting residents into “volunteering” and donating money to the project?

With all of the financial hardships that South Euclid residents are currently enduring; including the drastic loss of their property values—how could anyone inside the Mayor’s administration or Council not realize this was not the time to undertake such a proposition? Why wasn’t the financing secured prior to making solid commitments?

Mayor Georgine Welo has been consistently vocal about the inevitable fact that resources will NEED to be interconnected in order for the Greater Cleveland Region to survive. It is precisely because of this that it makes no sense for South Euclid to ignore Preston’s Hope in nearby Beachwood.

A Sad Reminder

Satellite photographs below show the area at Anderson and Green Roads then and now. This immediate area is host to the Euclid Creek which flows within feet of a significant portion of this development. Was this responsible stewardship?
