Congratulations Brush class of 2011, we dropped from effective to continuous improvement on the state scale. We are now 3 from the bottom on a scale of 7 ratings. And what did our superintendent have to say about this? “It looks like the high-end (students), especially at Memorial, are not performing as well as they should be.” as quoted on cleveland.com. Guess what SE-L Board of Ed and Administration, when you cut STEP-UP 3 years ago we warned this very effect and that it would effect your state funding as well. Maybe you should respond to your student population and community when they speak at Board meetings and ask questions. I spoke at 8 consecutive Board of Ed meetings as a 15 year old, (and I wasn't the only student speaking), and was ignored. I received the monotonous response of "THANK YOU, NEXT SPEAKER." I wrote letters to all administrators and Board members and the only response I got was from Treasurer Pestello. I had to call the houses of the Board members to get someone to talk to me and to give me honest answers to my questions. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. DO NOT TRY TO TELL ME THAT STEP-UP IS BACK BECAUSE YOU NOW HAVE 1 TEACHER TEACHING 10 GRADES OF CLASSES AND HONORS CLASSES AND AP CLASSES ARE NOT THE SAME THINGS AS GIFTED ED. In fact, at the time there was even a document on the disctrict website stating the difference between honors students and gifted students. I included that in my letters to the Board and Administration and within a week it was taken down off of the website, Nice try SE-L, maybe we should think about things before we act, and yes Dr. Zelei, I'm still waiting on that $30,000 a year raise to be put into scholarships for your high performance students so that they have some motivation to do well and to make you look good.

During my senior year Dr. Zelei came into a blood drive Brush and a student asked me, "Who is that?" How can you run a district if your own students don't even know who are?

I think the best change for the district would be to close down the Board building and move them into a small add-on to Brush. Then they would live in the environment that they make decisions about and students and teachers alike would have direct access to them. Maybe then some things will start to change in our wonderful community.

It pains me to do this but knowing that there will surely be another levy coming up soon I think I have the responsibility to share what I have seen as a student with our loving taxpayers. I SAW SOME GREAT THINGS IN MY YEARS IN SE-L, AND YES I AM STILL PROUS TO SAY THAT I WAS A BRUSH ARC. But before the next levy is passed, or voted down, there are some serious questions that need to be answered by this administration.

Sincerely
Chris Curran
